For more than 160 years, bentwood furniture has been produced in Bystřice pod
Hostýnem.
A place gains its genius loci from the events that have taken place within its
walls. Michael Thonet’s factory in Bystřice pod Hostýnem has been operating
without interruption since 1861, making 2021 the year in which we celebrate
160 years of the factory’s existence.
We are reminded of our rich history every time we move through the old factory
complex, which has stood witness to the events that have shaped the
company’s direction. Now we shape the latest chapter of the
company’s history, trusting that the factory will watch over the work of at
least six more generations as they push its development even further. This
special occasion has provided the impetus for a collection of stories, which
jointly uncover important milestones in the life of the factory in the ±
160 book. The stories reveal the many ways in which bentwood has shaped
countless lives.

The Czech–English book ± 160 Years describes, across 259 pages, the
historical and social events that shaped the development of bentwood furniture
from Bystřice pod Hostýnem. This richly illustrated publication was written by
Czech art curator Adam Štěch and published with the support of Ton.
